Exciting Upsets and Close Calls at Local Table Tennis Night - Fixture Recap 07.05.2024

In an incredible finish to the local club’s top-grade weekly competition, the very consistent Matthew Pettett narrowly prevailed over Rayden Smith with scores of 7-11, 11-7, 11-7, 9-11, and 14-12.

Both Pettett and Smith have represented the city and the state, and they continue to provide stability at the top end of the sport locally. In the last round of fixtures, they put on a great show with hard-hitting attacking shots and impressive court coverage.

Rayden Smith recently showcased his competitive prowess by winning both the Chauvel Industrial Services men's open singles and the highest rating singles section in the Bolsover Radiology ratings events at the Rocky Open Championships. However, just days after his triumphs, he was overpowered by Joel Coughlan, a previous major title winner, in the local fixture. This loss was followed by his narrow defeat to Pettett, highlighting the close competition among these top players who all graduated from the club’s junior coaching program.

Other notable results in the top section included a thrilling match between Nick Green and Jakob Baker. Baker turned a two-nil deficit into a victory in the fifth set decider. He also secured an unexpected win over veteran Gerard Watts in five long games. Baker's captain, James O’Sullivan, won both his singles matches but faced some difficulties against Green.

In the second division, Pam Clarke starred by outlasting Chris Leitner in a tight 12-10 result in the fifth set. Clarke then pulled off another victory against Monica Deeth with scores of 10-12, 11-4, 8-11, 11-8, and 12-10, despite Deeth holding a commanding lead in the final set.

The club’s junior coaching sessions continue on Thursdays from 4:30 pm, welcoming beginners to improve their game with the help of qualified coaches. Advanced juniors have additional sessions available during the week to prepare for tournaments and senior fixtures.

For players of all ages and skill levels, Club Night on Mondays from 7:30 pm offers an opportunity to play matches. The Top Table format on Thursdays from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm provides another chance to compete. The playing centre at 157 Campbell Street is also open for practice and training on Wednesdays from 9:00 am to 11:00 am and on Saturdays from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm. More details are available on the club’s Facebook page.
